Reception – Summer 2

 

Mathematics

This term the children will be learning how to:

  • Count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order.
  • Children to solve problems that include halving, doubling and sharing.
  • Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems
Communication and Language

During this term the children will be learning how to:

  • Maintain two-channelled attention
  • Can listen and do for a short span
  • Listen and respond to ideas expressed by others in conversation or discussion
  • Extends vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words
  • Express themselves effectively showing awareness of others
Literacy

This term Reception will focus on:

  • Continuing to learn the phonic sounds with an emphasis on ‘special friends’ sounds such as ‘sh’.
  • Using phonic knowledge to read and understand simple sentences.
  • Use phonic knowledge to decode words and read them aloud accurately.
  • Demonstrate understanding when talking to others about what they have read.
  • Write simple sentences that can be read by themselves and others.
  • Words that the children write are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

This term Reception will focus on:

  • At home you can:- Continue to read with your child every night.
  • Continue to read a variety of books with your child.
  • Ask children to think of sentences and attempt to write these.
Themes
  • The key theme is ‘Journeys’.
  • The focus texts for this theme are ‘Whatever Next!’ and ‘You can’t take an elephant on a bus’
  • Themes will be continued to be planned by the interests of the children too.

 

 

Physical development

This term the children will be developing:

  • To use good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.
  • Handling equipment and tools effectively including pencils for writing
  • Their knowledge of the importance for good health through physical exercise and a healthy diet.
Religious Education

In this half term we will look at one key RE topics.

The topic for this term is called ‘People who help us’. The children will learn about some artefacts found in the church and what they symbolise. The children will recall a few features from the celebration of Mass and identify parts in stories that show Jesus helping and caring for other people. The children will then discuss how they have an opportunity to follow Jesus by the way we live.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The term the children will be learning:

  • To show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, and form positive relationships with adults and other children.
  • To be confident when speaking to a familiar group and will talk about their ideas and choose resources needed for their chosen activity.
  • To talk about their own and others’ behaviour and its consequences and know that some behaviour is unacceptable.
  • To adjust behaviour for different situations.
